    COSTA TROPICAL      COSTA DEL SOL

The map above shows the southern coast of Spain, click to see an enlarged view. The map below shows a similar map from Malaga through to Motril and the village of Gualchos to the east of the map. Motril has many facilities including a Port, many shops, restaurants and bars. About 25 minutes inland nestling in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada is the small village of Gualchos where Graham Turner is based.

The village is only 10 minutes drive from the beach at Castell de Ferro a small pleasant beach resort near Motril.

The village has proved very attractive to buyers from abroad particularly the British and Danish. A sizeable number of both have purchased property in the village. This has increased prices of property recently but they are still competitively priced when compared to the rest of the Costa Del Sol particularly in the region of Malaga, Marbella and surrounding resorts.

Within easy reach is Salobrena a larger beach resort with all the usual facilities.

Almunecar further along the coast has good facilities and noted for the Saturday Market which is very popular.

Nerja is approximately 45 minutes drive from Motril is an attractive centre with good beaches, the Balcon, and numerous Bars & Restaurants.

Malaga is the nearest International Airport and served by a wide range of Operators including Easy Jet. Car hire is easy and there are a wide range available. Recommended when booking from the UK is Malaga Car Hire who have good discounted rates and very good cover.

GUALCHOS

Gualchos is an attractive village (pueblo) set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is approximately 1000 feet ( 300 metres ) above sea level which gives it a very agreeable climate. It has views of the sea and the mountains which are snow capped in winter.

The village is only 10 minutes by car from the beach ( Playa ) at Castell de Ferro a small but pleasant resort nearby. Skiing is within easy reach by car, in the Sierra Nevadas.

Gualchos itself has two bars, again very friendly owners, a well stocked shop, Church and a School. There is a Plaza with trees for shade making it a very agreeable place to sit, chat and share a drink with the locals. Summer evenings are particularly pleasant with balmy, scented air, best enjoyed outside one of the bars overlooking the valley.

There is quite a large ex-pat community in the village, mainly English and Danish who get on well with the local people who are very friendly.

Drinking water in the village is provided by the "Mina" a source of clean mountain water, which is much preferred by the locals to the on line supply. To the left is another view of Gualchos taken from just above the road that wends past the village.

MOTRIL

Motril is approximately 25 minutes by car is a large centre with all the facilities of a large town, including Shops, Restaurants, Tapas Bars, etc. Most bars serve free tapas when one purchases a drink, a very agreeable gesture from the very friendly Spanish people. There are several large supermarkets one of the biggest being "El Campo" where almost everything can be purchased. Beer, wines & spirits are very good value with prices far lower than those in the UK. Cheers !

LUJAR

Lujar is another very pleasant Pueblo Blanco (White Village) approximately 25 minutes drive from Gualchos over the mountain road, although it is still only about 15 minutes drive from Castell de Ferro. A feature of the village is a large public swimming pool with its own Tapas Bar, shown left. This is a very agreeable place to while away a summer day with cool beer, tapas and a refreshing dip in the pool. The owner is very partial to wild boar, and may give you a sample with your beer or the equally refreshing locally made wine.

You will often see locals transporting goods using mules, life is still very traditional in the villages. Growing produce is perhaps the biggest source of income in the area, with the fine climate. Many of the locals have a " Campo" which we would call an allotment where they grow their own fruit and vegetables. Often they will give you samples, there is nothing quite like the taste of freshly cut produce. After tasting these you will be put off supermarket fare for life.
